Background of the Study
Tiv language, spoken predominantly in Benue State, is a rich repository of cultural heritage that profoundly influences its pragmatic language use. Cultural heritage manifests in the form of proverbs, idioms, and traditional expressions that guide social interactions and convey collective values. Tiv speakers employ these pragmatic markers to navigate conversations, express respect, and maintain community cohesion (Uko, 2023). These markers not only serve as tools for effective communication but also act as vehicles for transmitting historical and cultural knowledge from one generation to the next. However, modernization and the spread of global communication norms are impacting traditional practices, leading to a potential erosion of culturally embedded pragmatic elements (Afon, 2024). This study investigates how cultural heritage shapes pragmatic language use among Tiv speakers by analyzing conversational patterns and traditional discourse in various community settings. The aim is to understand the extent to which cultural heritage is maintained in everyday language and to propose strategies that support the preservation of Tiv pragmatic traditions in a rapidly changing socio-cultural landscape.

Statement of the Problem
Modern influences threaten the traditional pragmatic language practices among Tiv speakers in Benue State, risking the dilution of culturally specific markers essential for conveying communal values (Uko, 2023). As globalization and digital media introduce new communication styles, the rich heritage embedded in Tiv language may be compromised, leading to misunderstandings and loss of cultural identity (Afon, 2024). There is limited research on how these changes affect everyday communication, making it crucial to assess the impact of cultural heritage on pragmatic language use in Tiv communities.

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the influence of cultural heritage on Tiv pragmatic language use.

  • To identify key cultural markers in Tiv discourse.

  • To recommend strategies for preserving these traditions.

Research Questions

  • How does cultural heritage influence pragmatic language use among Tiv speakers?

  • What traditional markers are most significant?

  • What strategies can preserve these markers in modern contexts?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the role of cultural heritage in shaping pragmatic language use among Tiv speakers in Benue State. Its findings will inform efforts by educators, cultural custodians, and linguists to preserve indigenous communication practices and enhance cultural identity (Uko, 2023; Afon, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Tiv language interactions in Benue State and focuses solely on pragmatic aspects influenced by cultural heritage.

Definitions of Terms

  • Cultural Heritage: Traditions and values passed down through generations.

  • Pragmatic Language Use: The use of language to achieve social functions.

  • Tiv Speakers: Members of the Tiv ethnic group in Benue State.
